butcher blocks have become highly popular among homeowners worldwide.
However, basic cleaning and
maintenance instructions are to be followed in order to make sure that

First, you will have to oil your butcher block on a constant basis – oil it on sides, bottom and top and make sure that you give extra attention to its end-grain areas because these areas are the most likely to absorb all the humidity through their surface.
Also, make sure that each drill or cut you make in your butcher block is oiled thoroughly. For instance, you can use Proterra mineral oil to assure the best protection for your butcher block. Use a soft brush and oil the butcher block on all its sides. Also, you can simply pour a very small quantity of oil and spread it by using the brush. Make sure that you let the butcher block soak all the oil for about 30 minutes. Then, remove all the excess oil by using an absorbent paper towel. Once your butcher block is first installed, you should apply at least 2 successive coats of oil. After this, you can apply the oil once several months. Also, when you sand the butcher block in order to remove cut marks or scratches, you must make sure that you apply a new coat of oil.
In order to keep the butcher block clean, you will have to brush away or scrape any food residues on a regular basis. Wash these residues with some warm soapy water and make sure you dry the surface by using a paper towel or dry cloth. Once you have done this, you will have to apply a new coat of oil. Also, you can go for a 1:4 combination of mineral oil and bee wax until this mixture becomes totally homogenized. Apply the mixture on your butcher block and provide its whole surface with extra protection against both humidity and stains.
Remember to avoid setting your butcher block next to extremely hot places/heat sources like ranges or stoves unless you have the appropriate insulation between such heat sources and your butcher block. Also, you must avoid spilling vinegar on your butcher block especially if it has a mineral oil finishing because this could easily cause cracking or cupping. Additionally, you must not use excessively harsh detergents or corrosive chemicals as they can cause an irreversible depreciation of your butcher block.
