What are ceramic tile counter tops?

Ceramic tile countertops are countertops laid with ceramic tiles, secured with grout. Ceramic tiles are a popular choice for countertop material, especially in homes. They are made from pressed clay with a matte finish. Some ceramic tiles may have a glaze of metallic oxides, which gives it an iridescent color effect. Ceramic tile countertops can add an interesting accent to almost all types of kitchen and bath design. They are also very functional. A ceramic tile countertop can last years.

Advantages

Low maintenance. Ceramic tiles countertops are best known for being low maintenance. Virtually all types of stains, including burn marks from pans, can be easily removed using water and a mild detergent.

Durability. Ceramic tile countertops are also very durable. They can withstand more impact and pressure than plastic-based countertops, such as laminate and solid surface. They are also highly heatproof, allowing you to use them as a surface for hot tea kettles and pots. Ceramic tile countertops are scratch resistant as well.

Water resistance. Ceramic tile countertops have a high resistance against moisture damage. Each tile is highly waterproof, keeping water from collecting inside and spreading bacteria.

Ease of use. Ceramic tile countertops are easy to install, so you do not have to spend on contractor's fees for installation.

Affordability. Ceramic tile countertops are less expensive than stone materials, such as marble or granite. Expect to pay between a dollar and $100 per square foot, depending on the size and uniqueness of your design.

Disadvantages

Brittleness. Although ceramic tiles are scratch-proof, they can easily crack under hard impact, such as falling pots or cans. They can also crack under extreme temperature conditions.

Uneven surfaces. Ceramic tile countertops do not have a smooth, flat surface like laminate or solid surface. This makes them a poor choice for certain tasks such as rolling dough or cutting cookies.

Weak grout. The grout lines between each ceramic tile can easily stain on the counter, especially if the wrong type of grout is used.

Buying and maintenance

When choosing a ceramic tile countertop, look for one with a uniform color or pattern. This will give your countertop a more polished appearance and will look great with any kitchen design, which you will find handy if you decide to remodel your kitchen. If your budget allows, invest in a bottle of ceramic glaze. Regular reapplication of glaze will keep the grout in place and keep it from gathering dust, dirt, and moisture.
