Placing hot pans on concrete countertops

Concrete is generally heat-resistant, but it can be susceptible to thermal shock especially if it is directly exposed to an extremely hot object. Concrete countertops also exhibit this vulnerability. The exposed concrete countertop surface can be damaged by high temperature.

The effects of placing hot pans on you concrete countertop

Manufacturers and contractors of concrete countertops do not recommend placing hot pans and plates directly on your kitchen top because of the disadvantages it can bring. It is actually the seal of the countertop surface and not the concrete itself that is damaged by the heat in hot pans and plates. The seal is the coating that provides your concrete countertop protection against stains, cracks, chips, and harmful chemicals. If it becomes damaged by heat, it would not be able to prevent cracks, chips, and stains from affecting the countertop. Just like in granite countertops, the application of extreme heat on your concrete countertop can make the surface chip or flake away. The surface's sealer, coating, color, and wax finish can also be damaged permanently.

Although concrete countertops are designed to be durable and withstand a lot of pressure, the serious damage caused by heat can lead to its short service and replacement after some time.

Safety measures to observe when placing hot pans on your concrete countertop

  • As a general rule, do not place hot pans, plates, cups, cookware, and other items directly on your concrete countertop. The heat can damage the sealer and eventually the concrete underneath.

  • Whenever you need to place a hot object on your concrete countertop, place a hot pad, trivet, or a place mat under it. See to it that your kitchen countertop is always equipped with these kitchen aids.

  • The maximum temperature of items that you can put directly on your concrete countertop and still not damage it is 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Remember, however, that these hot items can already damage the sealer on the surface. To be safe, do not forget to use hot pads or trivets.

  • If you want the convenience of using permanent hot pads on your concrete countertop, have it installed with inserts so you can set hot pans and plates directly on your countertop. You can also have permanent trivets installed. Contact your concentrate countertop contractor if you want this done. You can have a choice of installing stainless steel, copper, or brass trivets.

  • Have a regular evaluation of your concrete countertop. Once in a while, check it for burns, scratches, cracks, chips, or any other damage. Regular coating, waxing, and sealing must be done. To expect a long and durable life from your concrete countertop, proper maintenance, regular cleaning, and observing appropriate safety measures should be practiced.
